The Trillion-Dollar Opportunity

The economics of enterprise AI readiness

From AI potential to realised value

Powerful AI is increasingly available across organisations. The harder economic problem is converting that capability into sustained performance. This paper develops a framework for AI value conversion and estimates the scale of productivity-equivalent value that may remain unrealised when adoption does not translate fully into performance.

Around $1 trillion per year of productivity-equivalent value at stake in the reference scenario

The economic problem

AI access is becoming less differentiating as capable models and software become more widely available. The economic question increasingly shifts to conversion: whether organisations can turn AI capability into sustained, measurable performance.

The paper separates four analytical questions — Economic Opportunity, AI Readiness, Value Realisation and Value Capture — so that technical capability, organisational capacity, economic outcomes and distribution are not confused.

AI readiness as a value-conversion capability

AI readiness is the organisational capacity to convert AI potential into sustained, measurable performance. The framework groups readiness into six connected capability areas:

Strategic & operating
People & adoption
Data & technology
Risk, assurance & governance
Commercial & ecosystem
Measurement & learning

How the headline estimate is built

The reference model combines global economic and labour-income data, the International Labour Organization's occupational exposure estimates for generative AI, published evidence on productivity gains from AI-assisted work, and an evidence-informed conversion-gap scenario.

The model estimates approximately $3 trillion per year of gross labour-productivity-equivalent GenAI potential. In the reference scenario, around $1 trillion per year remains unrealised because that potential is not fully converted into sustained economic performance.

The estimate is an order-of-magnitude economic scenario. It is not a forecast of corporate profit, revenue or GDP growth, and it does not attempt to monetise every wider economic effect of AI.
